Global Conversations is an extension of PCI’s SHE (Strong Healthy Empowered) Initiative.  SHE is a group of ambassadors who dedicate their efforts, time, energy, skills, and “hands on experience” to benefit and support Project Concern International’s (PCI) programs throughout the world. Through the synergy of the SHE program, we work together to find innovative ways to ensure women are able to live lives that are strong, healthy and empowered.

SHE members reach out and support PCI’s programs in the local community, and have the opportunity to participate in vision trips, volunteer internationally, as well as attend locally hosted educational events and social occasions.

2013’s second Global Conversation was held in mid-October at the San Diego home of Wendy Gillespie – PCI donor, community leader and philanthropist. Mrs. Gillespie graciously opened her home for this social gathering event – complete with wine, hors d’oeuvres and conversation among 50 local philanthropists and PCI friends.

The highlight of the evening was a presentation by USD Women Peacemaker, Rutuparna Mohanty of India. Mrs. Rutuparna is a lawyer and human rights activist in India, the 4th daughter of freedom fighter followers of Mahatma Ghandi.

Earlier this month, as one of four recognized women Peacemakers, Rutuparna Mohanty spoke at USD’s Institute for Peace and Justice Theatre. For PCI’s event, she joined our Director of Development, Uli Heine, at our Global Conversation to educate our guests about the tragic prevalence of violence against women and trafficking in India; a topic of great interest to our supporters as part of recent engagement in issues of sex trafficking in San Diego.

Rutuparna Mohanty is actively involved in her native India, supporting women standing up to injustice. “Mohanty created Maa Ghara (Mother’s Home), which provides a shelter for rehabilitating trafficked and sexually exploited women and girls. Through rescue, care and legal protection, the home has served 5,000 women since 2004.” (www.sandiego.edu)

PCI’s Uli Heine was pleased by the large turnout at this Global Conversation. Furthermore, she said, “These events have added value because we introduce people to other great groups and speakers who they otherwise wouldn’t know.”

PCI’s Global Conversations create ideal situations and positive synergy among friends, new and old; like-minded friends who wish to engage positive change globally in the lives of others.
