London Ladies Giving Circle
PCI believes that women are the solution to poverty. When you empower women, they create a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities.
What is Women Empowered
Women Empowered (WE) is PCI’s global initiative dedicated to promoting the economic and social empowerment of women through the formation of self-managed and self-sustaining savings groups. A women’s saving group (WE group) consists of 15-20 women who save money together, lend to each other and conduct business together. To date, PCI’s WE Initiative has:
- Supported the creation of more than 35,000 WE groups;
- Facilitated savings and loans equaling $5.1 million;
- Engaged over 475,000 individuals in economic and social empowerment groups.
WE in Zambia
Since 1996, PCI has been helping Zambia confront its HIV/AIDS crisis, working with the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups. Through leveraging strategic partnerships with church networks, the Zambian Defense Force and existing community structures, the Women Empowered Initiative has played an integral role is equipping individual women with the resources and skills they need to be resilient, as well as to support their families, better serve their communities and sustain a response to HIV/AIDS.
In previous implementations of WE programming in Zambia, statistically significant improvements were found in areas related to poverty reduction, and improvements to household education, social capital and health. For example, WE group member’s expenditures on their children’s education increased 60%, and almost 90% of WE members reported being tested for HIV. In addition, a 20% increase was found in WE group members’ ability to meet their needs across health, housing and transportation.
PCI believes that expanding WE to reach more women and adolescent girls in Zambia will provide critical support for them to use their voice in their communities to address current challenges. WE will also reinforce existing local and regional priorities such as creating a culture of savings and financial capability, making informed sexual and reproductive health choices, and reducing risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.
The London Ladies Giving Circle is proud to support the expansion of WE in Zambia by committing to raise $10,000.

How it Works
Groups of 15-20 women, mirroring the WE savings groups, pool their money to support WE groups and become informal ambassadors for WE. Women participating in the group contribute £25 to £100 per month with the goal of pooling £6,000 annually per Giving Circle for investment in WE groups.
Each circle has a Chair who coordinates regular gatherings and acts as liaison with PCI. Giving Circles meet 2-3 times a year to receive updates on the WE initiative. Those with less time may opt to receive updates on their investment electronically. For more information, please contact Uli Imhoff Heine at firstname.lastname@example.org.
