Eliminating Health Disparities
Did you know?
- Black families are more likely to experience low birthweight, preterm birth and infant mortality.
- Black mothers are three to four times more likely to die from childbirth than non-hispanic white women.
- Because of historical and systemic barriers, African American mothers have the lowest rate of breastfeeding initiation and duration.
- The use of midwifery and doula services have been shown to almost eliminate racial/ethnic disparities in birth outcomes.
To address these disparities, PCI’s Healthy Start program offers services to promote positive birth and parenting experiences in diverse Black communities in San Diego.
