Why should I donate my vehicle to support PCI?
Your donation will support PCI’s programs which work to help the world’s most vulnerable children, families, and communities achieve lives of hope, good health, and self-sufficiency.
Donating your vehicle will also benefit you by reducing your taxable income when taxes are itemized, thus saving you money. Additionally, you avoid the costs associated with selling a car- no need for advertising, vehicle registration payments, insurance, or repairs necessary to keep your old car in working condition as you wait for a buyer.
Do you only accept cars for donation?
No! Vehicles such as boats, motorcycles, trucks, cars, motor homes, and airplanes will all be accepted. If you have questions regarding the eligibility of your vehicle, please contact the donation program at 844-PCI-4-CAR.
Does my vehicle have to be in working condition to donate it?
Not necessarily. In most cases we can take your car regardless of whether it is running or not. However, it must have an engine and be towable.
Do I have to be present at the time of the pickup?
No. In order to make donating your vehicle easy and convenient, special arrangements can be made by calling our representatives at 844-PCI-4-CAR.
How long will donating my vehicle take?
If we receive your call early in the day, same-day pickup may be available! A tow company will contact you within 2-3 business days.
Is there a lot of paperwork associated with donating my vehicle?
The process is easy and convenient! The only paperwork necessary is a signed, clear title for your vehicle. Please keep in mind that the clear title must indicate that the title is in the name of the donor without a lien.
Do I need a smog certificate in order to donate my car?
In the states that require smog certificates or safety inspections, you may donate your vehicle without these documents.
What if I receive a legal notice?
In the unlikely event that you do receive any notification of a lien sale, DMV action or other activity related to your vehicle, please contact us immediately at 844-PCI-4-CAR for assistance.
Will I get a tax receipt for my donation?
Yes, you will receive IRS Form 1098-C in the event that the sale of the vehicle exceeds $500 stating the amount of the gross proceeds from the sale of the donated vehicle. If the vehicle does not exceed $500, the thank you letter that you will receive can be used as a tax receipt.
What can I claim as a deduction?
According to the tax law effective January 1, 2005, if the claimed value of the donated vehicle exceeds $500, the taxpayer is limited to the gross proceeds from the sale. IRS Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes, will be mailed to you within 30 days of the sale stating the amount of gross proceeds received from your car, provided your vehicle sold for more than $500 and you have submitted your social security number. This will be your tax receipt for your charitable contribution.
How is the value determined on the vehicle donated?
The value is determined by the gross proceeds raised from the sale of the donated vehicle.
